Your face is exposed daily to lots of rays and these can damage your skin, it feels good to lounge in the sunshine, but it can hurt your health in the long run. Over the years, too much time outdoors can put you at risk for wrinkles, age spots, scaly patches called actinic keratosis, and skin cancer.

What other light can damage your skin?

Your smartphone — along with tablets, laptops, and TV screens — gives off blue light, and the exposure could be changing your skin.

Blue Light and Your Skin Research shows blue light from electronic devices can lead to changes in your skin cells, including cell shrinkage and death. These speed up the aging process. Even exposures as short as 60 minutes can trigger these changes.

Too much blue light could also lead to pigmentation. One study linked blue light exposure to more swelling, redness, and pigment changes in people with darker skin.

Chemical peels

A chemical peel is a non-surgical procedure performed by a dermatologist using various solutions to improve skin appearance. The depth of treatment varies. It can be superficial, medium or deep depending on skin type and the cosmetic and therapeutic goal. Peels are used to remove the outermost layers of the skin so new, clear skin can come to the surface. In many cases, removal will take with it areas of uneven pigmentation, precancerous lesions and fine lines. Chemical peels can either be performed in a series or as a one-time treatment, depending on the peel depth. “Downtime for superficial peels is minimal,” explains Dr. Mishra. “You may experience redness and swelling with a deeper peel. Medium and deep peels require longer recovery time. After any chemical treatment, strong protection is a must.”
